Røros - Long Distance Sled Dog Racing 3rd - 11th of February 2011 The first World Championship ever in Long Distance Sled Dog Racing will take place in Røros in February 2011. The organisers behind the Femund Race, the world's largest race of this kind, will facilitate the World Championship race. The Femund Race has long experience in arranging long distance sled dog races and sees about 150 mushers at the starting line every year. In front of their sleds they have about 1,500 eager and fit dogs. The sled dog sport attains an increasing amount of interest from the media as well as the public, and this race has become one of the important showcases for sled dog sports in Norway. The Femund Race is by far the largest and most exotic sport event in the Røros region and the Nord-Østerdalen valley. Some of the world's greatest and most experiences mushers line up here - year after year. The World LD Championship in 2001 will be the 22nd Race in succession and more than 15 countries have been represented here throughout these years. A reliable winter climate and the magnificently beautiful nature in this region have made Røros a center for sled dog sports in Norway. There are three large long distance sled dog races that have a connection to the region. Røros and the Friends of the Femund Race Association are very proud to host the first ever World Championship in Long Distance Sled Dog Racing! The race has two classes; 8-dog teams race 400km and 12-dog teams race 600km. Start and finish are in Røros while the race runs through seven mountainous municipalities. The race has checkpoints designed to be hospitable and accessible to the public, and from these members of the public have ample opportunities to follow both races up close. The two classes have joint checkpoints at Tufsingdalen, Drevsjø, Søvollen, Tynset and Tolga, while the longer race (600km) also has an additional loop through the Folldal mountains and an additional check point at Grimsbu.
